The instrument that MODWHEEL has sampled for their Biscuit Tin Guitar library is a one off, hand crafted by Steve Roche. Steve has been making tin guitars and other odd instruments for many years for use in his soundtrack work with Plan 9 and live with the bands he performs with. This particular instrument is a 4 string fretless with open G Banjo tuning (D G B D). For sampling purposes the range of the instrument has been extended down to the E below the D of its natural range. The instrument is fitted with a pickup and was recorded both acoustically as well as through a vintage Fender Twin Reverb amp. As an acoustic instrument the Biscuit Tin Guitar has a wonderfully unique sound that is caught somewhere between a Dobro and a Banjo. The electric version can sit anywhere between clean and a tin can being dragged behind a car, depending on your taste.

The Daf (or Dap) is a large Persian frame drum used in popular and classical music. The frame is usually made of hardwood with many metal ringlets attached by hooks, and the membrane is usually goatskin. The Daf is used mostly in the Middle East and Central Asia, to accompany singing and performances on the tambur, violin, oud, saz, and kanun. Dafs can be played to produce highly complex and intense rhythms, causing one to enter a trance and reach an ecstatic state. For this reason, they have always been connected with religion. In Iran, Sufis use Dafs during their spiritual chanting rituals.

Slap Bass was sampled from a Fender Jazz electric bass guitar with Carvin J99 pickups and DR Hi-Beam bass strings directly into a Radial Pro48 DI Box. An extended range was obtained by tuning the E-string all the way down to a C. The low B (B0) of a standard 5-string bass was omitted do to “floppiness” from down-tuning. “Slap” and “pop” articulations were carefully and meticulously recorded for each note, although in the extreme upper range of the bass, do to tension of the string, normal notes starts to become indistinguishable from a pop articulations. Regular notes were recorded with a guitar pick, in order to maintain a semi-percussive and metallic sound.
